• 5th GRADE BAND - BEGINNING BAND INFORMATION

  • COMMITMENT & SIGN-UP

    • All 5th and 6th grade students must do either band or chorus/general music. Students who sign up to do band must commit to band for the entire school year.
      • SEPTEMBER 8, 2023 will be the deadline to sign up for 5th grade band
    • Band in middle school is a graded class during the school day. Students who sign up for band will attend weekly lessons and rehearsals during their specials rotation.
    • Each student must have parent permission to join band. At the beginning of the school year each band student must return a parent permission form.
    • During the first several rotations of the school year students will have the chance to try out various instruments. After the try-out phase, students will be required to pick one instrument and focus on that instrument for the entire school year.

    What Instruments can I play?

    You may choose one of the instruments below. You may choose one of the instruments below. Not all instruments are the same and each has its own challenges. It’s recommended that student try out instruments before deciding on what to play. All Instruments are equally fun and require the same amount of effort and practice time! 

    • Flute
    • Oboe, Clarinet
    • Saxophone
    • Trumpet/Cornet
    • F Horn/Mellophone
    • Trombone
    • Baritone/Euphonium/Tuba
    • Percussion - must learn both xylophone and drums

    HOW DO I GET AN INSTRUMENT?

    Students will need an instrument by the beginning of October.

    SCHOOL-OWNED INSTRUMENTS

    • The school has a limited number of instruments. Use of a school instrument is not guaranteed, and parents should first pursue options to rent, buy, or use one you already own.
    • School instruments are reserved only for those who cannot afford to rent or buy.
    • School instruments have to be signed out and the student is responsible for any damages
    • Percussionists will use the equipment at school, but still need their own drum pad & sticks

  • Goals & Objectives:

    • Learn to play and practice a band instrument individually
    • Learn good sound, rhythm, tempo (speed), and notes
    • Learn to care for and properly assemble the instrument
    • Learn to play and rehearse with other students, in small and large groups
    • Learn to perform for an audience, individually and in small groups

    Schedule:

    • Band Lessons run on a rotation - 5th period - A, C, D, E, or F
    • Band students come to band lessons instead of general music
    • Every rotation day B will be FULL Band with all students together
    • Band students should plan ahead for their lesson and full band days and be sure they have their instrument, music and supplies at school on those days

    Grading

    • Lesson participation & practicing - 10 points each lesson
    • Related CANVAS assignments - 5-10 points each rotation
    • Level playing tests, individually - 5 points
    • Large group rehearsal participation - 10 points

    Concerts:

    • Concert performances are our opportunity to showcase everything we have learned to parents and the community.
    • Concert performances are like our mid-term and final exams. They are mandatory and graded. Please plan ahead
