Matthew Newlin, MD, graduated from Tyrone Area High School in 1987 as Valedictorian of his class.  From Tyrone High, Newlin journeyed onward to pursue a degree in economics from Harvard University in Massachusetts. While at Harvard, Newlin majored in economics, became president of the Harvard Classics Basketball Team, and graduated with Honors in 1991.

 In 1994, after three years as an analyst in investment banking, he made the decision to depart business to pursue a doctoral degree in medicine, enrolling at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.  At Jefferson, he earned induction into the medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha.  Following his graduation from Jefferson Medical College in 1998, Dr. Newlin moved to Columbus, Ohio for 5 years of residency training in General Surgery at Riverside Methodist Hospital. From 2003 to 2004, he joined the Surgery Department at Ohio State University Medical Center, where he completed a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery — performing clinical, academic and research duties.

In 2004, Dr. Newlin returned from Columbus, Ohio to the local area.  He began his practice at Altoona Regional Health System which then became UPMC Altoona.  Dr. Newlin’s professional interests focus on gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery, and advanced laparoscopic surgery.  Dr. Newlin serves as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UPMC Altoona.  He holds several other leadership positions including Medical Director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program and Medical Director of the Robotic Surgery Program. Dr. Newlin has published in numerous medical journals and has delivered medical presentations locally, nationally, and internationally.

Dr. Newlin is active with his church, participates in a community improvement program called CityServe, and volunteers his time to coach youth soccer and basketball.

He resides in Huntingdon Furnace with his veterinarian wife, Laura Lake Newlin, DVM, herself a 1993 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. The couple has two children, Noah and Olivia.  Dr. Newlin is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Relda Newlin.
