Terry Singer

Dr. Terry L. Singer of Louisville, KY, and formerly, Tyrone, PA is being honored with the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award of the Tyrone Area School District. The son of the late Clinton and Dotty Singer, he graduated from Tyrone Area High School in 1964. Brothers, Tony (1965) and Tim (1967) also graduated from TAHS. Singer continued his education at the Pennsylvania State University, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and the University of Pittsburgh. During Dr. Singer’s early professional experience, he worked with street gangs, addiction, mental health and later directed an alternative high school, all in Pittsburgh.
In 1977, Singer began a career in higher education at Marywood College, now University, in Scranton, PA, where he later became Dean of Social Work in 1984. In 1997, he assumed the deanship of Social Work at the University of Louisville. During his professional life, Dr. Singer became a community leader as well as a nationally recognized social work educator. When he retired from the deanship in 2016, he was the longest-serving Dean of Social Work in the country. During a very successful career, Singer received many university, community and national awards of recognition for his service and leadership. He currently resides in Louisville, KY with his wife, Dr. Nancy Singer. Their children, Zachary and Joshua and his family also live in the city.
