Following graduation in 1969 from TAHS as valedictorian, Kelly started classes at Juniata College the next week. She graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics with teaching credentials. Recently she served as co-chair of her 50th Juniata College reunion. In 2016 Juniata College honored Kelly with the William E Swigart Jr Award for Humanitarian Service.
After college Kelly taught for a short stint at Bellwood-Antis School District. She taught mathematics in Tyrone for the next 12 years. Planning the 8th grade parties, running magazine sales, helping with the music department and even coaching junior high girls’ basketball kept her very busy. She even learned to drive school bus!
On February 3, 1973, she married Jeffrey (Jeff) Wike.
On July 1, 1985 Kelly left teaching and became a State Farm Insurance Agent. She has proudly held that position for the last 38 years. She enjoys helping her clients protect what is important to them.
Rotary has been a very important part of Kelly’s life since 1987. She and her husband have hosted 10 Rotary Exchange Students from all over the world. Kelly is proud that two of her exchange students have become American citizens - one of them is Gunter Volders a member of the school board here in Tyrone.
Kelly served as District Governor of Rotary District 7350 from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005. She has held many district offices including District Trainer, ShelterBox Chair, Paul Harris Society Chair, and Aide to the District Governor. Kelly is currently co-chair of the District Foundation Committee. She has received many awards from Rotary including the Citation for Meritorious Service, the Regional Service Award for a Polio-Free World and the Rotary Service above Self Award.
Her most meaningful Rotary experiences happened on Kelly’s six trips to India to immunize children against Polio. It was life-changing for her to know that by giving two small drops of vaccine to children she was able to save them from that crippling and sometimes deadly disease. While in India the group also helped to build dams to hold the monsoon waters for irrigation purposes
Kelly was also very involved with the Rotary Leadership Institute for over 20 years serving as a facilitator, a facilitator trainer, and as a division chair.
ShelterBox has also been a major part of her Rotary life. ShelterBox provides tents and/or tarps and necessary household items to families who have been displaced due to natural disasters or conflicts. As an Ambassador Kelly has raised over $100,000 and is a member of the ShelterBox Hall of Fame.
Kelly dedicated 13 years to the Tyrone Hospital as a member of the Board of Directors – 11 of those years as President. Following the merger with Penn Highland, she served on the Home Board of the system for two years.
Kelly and Jeff recently celebrated their 50th anniversary with a cruise from Cape Town, South Africa to Dubai. They spend their summers in their camper here in Pennsylvania and are becoming snowbirds, wintering in Port Orange, Florida. They currently have three fur babies – Popeye (a white boxer), Olive Oyl (a mini golden doodle), and Nika (the cat).
