• Reading Competition Team

    AKA Tyrone Golden Readers

     Advisors: Gwen Miller

Who: Students in 7th and 8th grade who love to read can test their knowledge against other student competitors.

What: The Interscholastic Reading Competition is a partnership between school districts and the Intermediate Unit in Altoona (IU8). The Interscholastic Reading Competition has been in existence since 1990 and provides over 1600 students in grades 4 through 12 the opportunity to test their knowledge about books they have read. The Reading Team will read books provided by the school throughout the school year. There is no cost for membership.

When:  The Tyrone Golden Readers meet once a week after school.

Where: Twice a year, once in the fall, and once in the spring, students will compete against other schools in a face-to-face competition at a location determined by IU8.

Why: To give our voracious readers an opportunity to showcase their knowledge of popular fiction, all the while building a sense of community among other students who share the same interests. As research suggests, lifelong readers develop stronger critical thinking skills.
