High School Jazz Ensemble

  • Goals & Objectives:

    • Play and rehearse in small and large group settings, multiple differening parts
    • Expanding musical concepts and vocabulary in rhythm, notes, scales, tempo, dynamics, melody and harmony, etc
    • Learning and developing jazz and pop music concepts, including soloing, improvisation, and varying styles
    • Develop confidence and skills needed to perform for an audience, individually and in small groups

    Schedule:

    • Everyday* of the week, 1st period
    • * Students who also do POPS will alternate days between POPS and Jazz
    • * 9th grade students will alternate between 9th grade advisory and Jazz

    Grading

    • Weekly participation in rehearsals & practicing - 10 points/week
    • Weekly CANVAS assignments - 10 points per assignment
    • Individual Playing Tests on concert music and scales - 2 times per year - 20 points
    • Concert Performances (see below) - 20 points

    Concerts:

    • Concert performances are like our mid-term and final exams. They are mandatory and graded. Please plan ahead
    • Thurs, Nov 19 @ 7:00pm (currently uncertain due to covid, to be announced)
    • Monday, Dec 14 @ 7:00pm, HS cafeteria (currently uncertain due to covid, to be announced)
    • Thurs, April 22 @ 7:00pm
    • Mon, May 17 @ 7:00pm, HS cafeteria
    • Other community performances are usually scheduled, TBA
