SOAR is our school-wide positive behavior and intervention support system (SWPBIS) and is a proactive approach that promotes appropriate student behavior and increased learning. At the middle school, SOAR is the acronym we use to help students easily remember the core values:
- Strive for Success
- Observe Safety
- Act with Integrity
- Respect All
During the first marking period, the entire middle school participates in a SOAR kick-off assembly. An important part of SWPBIS is the recognition and reinforcement of positive behaviors. Students can earn SOAR tickets by modeling any of the core values or participating in SOAR themed spirit days, such as jersey day, camo day, twin day, etc. Tickets are given out randomly, so students never know when they might earn a ticket. The SOAR tickets can then be used as “currency” in the SOAR store to buy a variety of items or traded in during special events and assemblies.
Examples of Core ValuesEach month, the Small Events Committee organizes themed events that typically coincide with the seasons/holidays. During October, we have a popcorn day at lunch, and in the winter we typically have a day where students can get hot chocolate. We will do spirit weeks where students dress up for school. Some of the themes we have done in the past are Superhero Day, Hawaiian Day, Tyrone Tough Day, and Hat Day. This year, SOAR is holding two dances. We will have a Neon Dance in the Fall and a Winter Formal in February. The Raffle Committee holds monthly raffles, and students place their SOAR tickets in a bucket for a chance to win a variety of things including Tyrone apparel, ice-cream, tickets to local businesses, etc. SOAR assemblies are held at the during each marking period. Students pay admission to these assemblies (usually 5 SOAR tickets) and can also use their tickets for a chance to be selected as a participant in the assembly. We have done SOAR Survivor, SOAR Olympics, Pep Rallies, Lip Sync Battles, Minute to Win it, etc.
We have a SOAR team of students that meets each day to help out wherever necessary in our school. These students help create a positive atmosphere in our school. They are responsible for running the SOAR Store, which entails inventory, ordering, sales, and stocking. The students provide community outreach by sending cards to nursing homes, holding a canned food drive in December, and doing many other important events. At school, the students will decorate the school for various functions, honor various staff members for staff appreciation, tutor other students, and overall, just provide help wherever needed. Our students really do want to help out their school and community!
